U.S. Army Captain Randolph D. Bynum, Sr. has more than 27 years of experience as an educator with proven results as a senior, executive level leader. Mr. Bynum began his career in 1976 as an elementary teacher in Lincoln, NC where he taught for several years before joining the army in 1984. Mr. Bynum returned to education in 1992 as an ELA teacher but soon afterwards advanced on to leadership where he realized his true passion for professional excellence and organizational change.

 

Since 1992, Mr. Bynum has served in several educational leadership roles. His extensive leadership experience includes, assistant principal, principal and area superintendent in Cobb County, GA, chief academic officer in Charleston, SC as well as associate superintendent of high schools in Atlanta, GA. Mr. Bynum has also achieved the distinguished recognition of being named a 2007 Fellow for the Broad Urban Superintendents Academy and while serving as chief academic officer in Charleston, SC, he successfully completed the prestigious Harvard University Public Education Leadership Program.

 

His most recent leadership role as superintendent of Sumter School District in Sumter, SC is notably recognized for leading the school district through the largest district consolidation in South Carolina for over sixty years. Mr. Bynum's executive leadership responsibilities also included providing effective leadership and oversight in the areas of curriculum, instruction, operations, financial management, and student achievement. The newly consolidated district included approximately 16, 400 students and over 3000 employees located at over 30 facilities. The facilities included 15 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, 3 high schools, 2 alternative schools, a career center, and various district support sites. Responsibilities also included oversight of a general fund budget of approximately $104 million and a special revenue budget in excess of $40 million.
